“He told me he was an astronaut, but that was quickly revealed as a lie. The first time we really met, he was in a little brown hallway, hunched over cardboard boxes, and I saw that he was actually a wolf.”

A wolf with an unknowable past – and a curious zipper in his back. His best friend, a deer whose smile is so friendly that it’s almost sinister. A world where it’s snowing all the time, where volcanoes always loom, where, when you answer your door, it could be anyone. The girl, our heroine, can’t control her wolf, and maybe that’s why she loves him. The wolf is by nature a romantic animal, solitary and free. But he’s also mercurial and secretive, and – as she is soon to find out – his heart is all hunger, and his appetite bottomless.

As a comic artist, Kathy MacLeod is a firm believer in the combined power of words and pictures.  “Post-Rapture” first came to life in the winter of 2005 in the form of a short story, but it wasn’t until 2011 that Kathy completed her vision by turning it into an illustrated work. Having finally married the words with the pictures she’d been imagining for seven years, she is presenting the tale in its entirety at Opposite Gallery.

A cross between animation and slideshow, “Post-Rapture” is a unique and immersive experience. Along with the 45-minute performance, there will be an exhibition of original artwork from the story as well as new, never-before-seen paintings. Kathy’s illustrations combine her childlike, faux-naive comic style with lush watercolor landscapes and interiors to create a fully realized and unforgettable world. The deceptively cute characters lure you in to a dark, sometimes uncomfortably honest tale of obsession and self-destruction – like a children’s book for troubled adults.

Kathy MacLeod is a cartoonist, painter, and illustrator. Her work can currently be seen, among other places, in BK Magazine, and on the wall outside of WTF. Her biggest work in progress, however, is the ongoing documentation of her life in comic form.
